Best of 2010

Here is my list of what I believe to be the best Films, Albums, and songs of the year. I know most people wont care what I have to say but I enjoy making the list and talking about it and if anyone wants to discuss or dispute my list or chime in with their own picks please feel free. Hopefully someone who hasnt seen one of these movies or listened to any of these albums will check them out now.

Some of these are my favorites it doesn't mean there weren't better movies from a critical stand point. These are a mix of the 10 I thought were most enjoyable and well made.

I would also like to say I did not get to see 127 hours, or The Kings Speech before writing this list unfortunately. Both are possible movies to make a dent in the list.

Also the top 3 movies were all amazing and I wouldnt argue with any order of the three this is just how I thought they should be.

The music was off the top of my head so I am sure I missed something.

Best Movies

1. Inception:

Hands down the movie of the year and as fas as I am concerned one of the top films of all time. Christopher Nolan is the best filmmaker out right now and just keeps topping himself every time you think it is impossible to do so.

2: The Social Network

A movie that I thought would be decent but ended up being amazing and more than likely the winner of the best picture Oscar. Jesse Eisenberg went from being the bootleg Michael Cera to being an A list actor. He owned this movie and this role like nothing else. Garfield and Timberlake also did great jobs in the supporting roles.

3: Toy Story 3

The highest rated movie of the year and the highest grossing animated movie of all time and for a reason. Toy Story is more than likely going to be the first animated movie which gets a nomination for best film at the oscars. Out of all the awesome movies this year this one was the one that hit both me and mostly everyone I know the most emotionally. Especially for everyone who was the same age as Andy when the first one came out and is now the same age as him give or take in this movie it had even more impact.

4: The Fighter

Another movie that I thought would be good but ended up being amazing. great jobs by everyone but Christian Bale was on another level especially losing all the weight for the part. I had Jesse Eisenburg pegged as my pick for best actor this year but Bale I think may have one upped him.

5: Scott Pilgrim Vs The World

What can I say that hasnt been said about this movie. So many people have said its one of the greatest ever made etc. Instantly in their top lists. It did the best job it could emulating the awesome graphic novels with the constraints it had. Most notably being shot before the last book was finished. Everyone was nervous about Michael Cera and he ended up owning the role. Kieran Caulkin also did an awesome job as did everyone all around. This movie pretty much summed up the NES generation. Either you are going to beyond love this movie or you are just not gonna get it. If you are a little too old its actually almost impossible to get this movie because you didnt grow up on everything it carries the banner for.

6: Kick Ass

This movie took its title beyond literally. Just awesome as hell from start to finish. Chloe Moretz stole the show as Hit Girl and pretty much killed Abigail Breslins career. Some of the best fight scenes I have ever seen. If you dont enjoy this movie something is seriously wrong with you.

7: The Town

Yet another movie that took me by surprise. Nothing groundbreaking just a really solid action/heist movie. Ben Affleck did a great job directing and writing and the entire cast is strong.

8: Easy A

A movie that a lot of people are discovering since it came out on dvd and from what I have seen people have been loving. Its a real love letter to every John Huges movie mixed with a perfect dose of mean girls. Emma Stone catapulted herself to the next level with this movie and it is probably 100 percent responsible for her getting the role of Gwen Stacey in the spiderman reboot (which she looks beyond perfect for with her blonde hair). Defiantly check this one out.

9: The A-Team

I know I said a lot of movies surprised me this year but none more than this. This ended up bieng one of the best Action movies I have ever seen with non stop action through the whole thing. The casting was amazing and everyone filled their roles perfectly. You do not need to be a fan of the tv show to love this movie.

10: Black Swan

Now I know a lot of people will say this movie deserved a spot much closer to the top of the list. I wont argue that it does. LIke I said though I ordered my list leaning more toward enjoyment with critical appeal being second. This movie unfortunately is getting so hyped up that I think a lot of people who would have enjoyed it are going to go in expecting a life changing movie and be let down even though it is still great. This movie is extremely well shot and I believe defiantly deserves best cinematography. Natalie Portman gives a great performance and should defiantly be nominated. I loooved the ending and I need to re-watch it because of all the parallels the movie has to the Ballet it is based off of. Aronofsky did a great job directing but I still think The Wrestler is his greatest movie. This film was another notch in his perfect track record though and I am really excited to see what the hell he has in plan for Wolverine 2.

So thats my top 10. Heres a few movies I enjoyed a lot which just didnt make the cut but I still think everyone should check out.

True Grit: One of the best reviewed films of the year and on a ton of top tens toward the top. I enjoyed it but the ending just kind of tapered off which kept it from really hitting hard to me. The Dialogue is some of the best ever and Steinfeld makes her debut performance and should win for best actress as fas as I am concerned.

Buried: I enjoyed this movie a lot but the idea of a one man show with Ryan Reynolds inside a coffin the entire time is worth watching for the execution alone wether or not you like the final product.

Kids Are Alright: Another solid movie that will be on a lot of top tens. Takes a good look at "Non Standard" family life.

Paranormal Activity 2: This probably is my number 11 just missing the top list. This movie could have easily been terrible and instead it was maybe not as scary as the first one but extremely well written tying itself perfectly into the first one answering all the questions and delivering one of the best endings of the year.

Harry Potter: This was a great movie and probably would have made the list except it is impossible to judge it on its own. It is only half of a movie. Its not even like Back to the future etc which have cliffhanger endings. This is like watching a movie just stopping it on someone in the middle and saying come back in 8 months to see the rest. I will say even with more giant movies coming out in 2011 than in history this is my most anticipated.

The Other Guys: Hilarious movie and another all star cast that all delivered.

Exit Through The Gift Shop: An interesting take at the world of Street Art and the most allusive artist in the world Banksy. Its up for heavy debate wether this movie is for real or all a huge creation of banksy but either way its worth checking out.

Despicable Me, How To Train Your Dragon, and Megamind. All awesome animated movies and must see if you enjoy the genre or even if you dont.

Best Albums:

1: Kanye West - My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy

This album is really a masterpiece and has some of the strongest songs ever on it such as The Title Track, Power, Monster, and Runaway. Every song is great and the Chris Rock skit is hilarious. This album is number one on every major list out there pretty much and it is well deserved. Love him or hate him no one can touch him.

2: Eminem - Recovery

After almost dying and also releasing two pretty weak albums that were nowhere up to the high standards Eminem has set over his career this album couldnt have been a better or stronger comeback. Every single song is amazing and lyrically nothing comes close. If the production was higher it would have easily taken album of the year. This is a must own album.

3: Alkaline Trio - This Addiction

This album is easily one of if not the best album they hve ever made and a real return to form for the band.

4: Drake - Thank Me Later

While the album was more geared toward slower songs than a lot of people expected I loved this album because it was the first album since Brand News Deja Entendu that could instantly change your mood and I could just sit and listen too and drift off. Lyrically amazing as well it showed Drake could hang with the big names.

5: Lady GaGa - The Fame Monster

I dont think I even have to write anything. Spawning some of the biggest singles of all time and the best selling album of the year by far. The Fame Monster solidified GaGa on top of the world. If her next album in May keeps the momentum I fully stand behind my statement that she is indeed the second coming of Madonna.

6: My Chemical Romance - Danger Days...

I was fully expecting to be very disappointed with this album after they scrapped a completed cd and decided ot make this one. I was totally wrong and this holds it own with their other releases and is another great concept and just all around great rock album.

7: Four Year Strong - Enemy Of The World

Just listen to Wasting Time once or twice and youll see.

8: Jimmy Eat World - Invented

Jimmy Eat World doesnt make bad albums or even songs. This is another "album" album not just a bunch of random songs. Coffee and Cigarettes is one of their finest yet.

9: Travie Mccoy - Lazarus

Everyone song on this album is solid as hell. As good as any Gym Class record without being a gym class record.

10: A Day To Remember - What Separates Me From You

I am not going to lie I hated this album at first. After a few listens it started to grow on me. Thje problem is that the second half is 10 times better than the first which is the exact opposite of what albums are designed for. Also not putting 2nd Sucks as the opener is probably the dumbest thing I have ever seen. About 60 percent of this album is solid and the rest isnt terrible but its not up to par. 2nd Sucks alone though is worth buying the album.

Honorable mention: Senses Fail - The Fire

Songs Of The Year:

1: Bedroom Intruder - Antonine Dodson

Not only is this probably the catchiest song ever but it deserves the spot for the fact that it wasnt just a flash in the pan viral song like all the others. It kept antoine Dodson in the spotlight all year and hes still going.

2: Love The Way You Lie - Eminem and Rihanna

3: Fuck You - Cee Lo Green

4: Runaway - Kanye West

5: Power Kanye West

6: Dead On The Floor - Alkaline Trio

7: 2nd Sucks - A Day To Remember

8: Wasting Time - Four Year Strong

9: No Love - Eminem and Lil Wayne

10: Fireworks - Drake

Honorable Mentions - The Way You Are - Bruno Mars and Monster - Lady GaGa

Black Cards at The Loft In Poughkeepsie NY 10/16/10

Here is the entire show from this past saturday of The Black Cards. Pete Wentz from Fall Out Boys new band. Also featuring Spencer from Hidden In Plain View.

This may not be your cup of tea but give it a chance. Its not wbat you are expecting but it is good once you lose your expectations for a rock band. It is very Lily Allenish. I reccomend song 2 History its probably my favorite so far. Also Song 9 is a good cover of Nancy Sinatras Bang Bang which you probably know from Kill Bill.

Whatever the case BeBe can sing her little ass off.

Scott Pilgrim thoughts.

I just saw Scott Pilgrim and then drove over 2 hours home afterward so I had a lot of time to process it. I want to preface this all by saying I went directly to the movie from one of the most awesome nights of my life so I was still up in the air so it wasnt the best way to go into it.

Anyway I loved the movie the more I thought about it on the way home and it sunk in. Everything happened in such a fast paced blur that it was hard to digest it all. My only half complaint with the movie and its not even a complaint is that they adapted the graphic novel so amazingly well that I felt like it was too short. The best way would have been to split it into two movies but that wouldnt have worked because of what it is and how it had to be sold. I think they should have added another 30 minutes or so. Theres so much more they could have fleshed out and really added so much more depth to everything. They also had to skip over so much stuff like Gideons ex gf's and the time that takes place between some of the books, and some more of the back story, at least explaining the highway. Thats a huge plot in the book with a huge bearing on the ending and they just brush it aside and then dont even explain it. Then they show how ramona was controlled for a split second making it even more confusing.

I will give them credit because they didnt have the 6th book before making the movie and they had to reshoot the end to semi make it match as best they could with only some of the info. I am excited to see the dvd with a directors cut and alternate ending.

I will say again they managed to adapt the novel so well. I loved how the effects were handled. And all the different zelda sounds and background music was amazing. The 8 bit universal intro also amazing.

The metric song they used for the clash at demonhead is soo good too. I gotta pick up the score and the soundtrack.

All in all I loved the movie I just know it could have been even more amazing. If you know the books you are going to appreciate the movie so much more because you will see all the small things that did that matched so well. The editing is also awesome. Edgar Wright is the best at what he does.

This is without a doubt the best video game type movie they will probably ever make.

Im curious to hear what everyone else thought of it. I know all the reviews have been ridiculously and surprisingly great for mainstream audiences not knowing anything going in.

Also download the game its one of the greatest things ever made.

Hilarious Video I made years ago.

Hilarious video I just found on my old HDD from about 4 or 5 years ago. I was with Jessie and my brother at the TRU in Kingston and this doll from the Incredibles was having a good time.
